Health & Athletic TrainingPhysical Forms
Our Athletic Training program began in 1992 through a partnership with Orthopedic Physician, Dr. John P. George. That relationship has continued since 1992 with the program growing to Athletic Training coverage for all practices and games inside of the BC Sports Programs in 1997, and finally with the expansion of the program to include a full time Athletic Training Services and School Health Services in 2002. Another value added program instituted by St. Joseph’s/Candler is our Strength and Conditioning program which was begun in 2003 and serviced by a staff member provided from St. Joesph’s/Candler. St. Joseph’s/Candler and BC continue to foster this relationship to the benefit of the students in which St. Joseph’s/Candler says “investing in the education of BC is an important community benefit for St. Joseph’s/Candler.”
Benedictine has been fortunate enough to have Brian Tuten as our Health Office Coordinator and Head Athletic Trainer since June 2004. Brian is employed by St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital where he has worked since 2002. Prior to his position at St. Joseph’s/Candler, he was employed as the Sports Medicine Coordinator for Appling County Healthcare System where he served as Athletic Trainer for Appling County High School from 1999-2002. He has also held an internship with the Denver Broncos of the NFL in 1998 and 1999.

Brian has a wife, Diana, and three wonderful children: Kyler, Kaden and Briana.
What is An Athletic Trainer?
Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.
Typical patients and clients served by athletic trainers include:
Athletic training is not the same profession as personal training. And certified athletic trainers work with more than just athletes – they can be found just about anywhere that people are physically active.
To become certified athletic trainers, students must graduate with bachelors or masters degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification. Once certified, they must meet ongoing continuing education requirements in order to remain certified.
